What are EASA B1 & B2 Exams?

When it comes to becoming a licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME) in Europe and many other regions that follow EASA standards, passing the EASA Part-66 B1 and B2 exams is a crucial step. These exams are not just tests of technical knowledge, they are the foundation for ensuring aviation safety and professional competency in aircraft maintenance.

What Are the B1 and B2 Categories?

The EASA Part-66 licence is divided into several categories, with B1 and B2 being the most common for those entering the field:

  • Category B1 (Mechanical)
Focuses on the mechanical aspects of aircraft maintenance. This includes:

    • Aircraft structures

    • Powerplants (engines)

    • Mechanical and electrical systems

    • Airframe and engine maintenance tasks

B1 engineers are hands-on professionals who work directly with aircraft components, engines, and systems to ensure they are safe and airworthy.

  • Category B2 (Avionics)
Specialises in the electrical and electronic systems of the aircraft. This includes:

    • Navigation systems

    • Communication systems

    • Automatic flight controls

    • Instrumentation

B2 engineers ensure that the aircraft’s avionics are operating correctly and are vital for safe and efficient operations.

What Do the Exams Cover?

The B1 and B2 exams test knowledge across a series of modules, each covering a specific technical subject. Depending on the licence category, the number of modules and the depth of knowledge required will vary.

  • B1 Exam Modules typically include:
Mathematics, Physics, Electrical Fundamentals, Digital Techniques, Materials & Hardware, Maintenance Practices, Basic Aerodynamics, Human Factors, Aviation Legislation, Turbine Engines, Piston Engines, and Aircraft Systems (Mechanical & Electrical).

  • B2 Exam Modules cover:
Mathematics, Physics, Electrical Fundamentals, Digital Techniques, Materials & Hardware, Maintenance Practices, Basic Aerodynamics, Human Factors, Aviation Legislation, and Advanced Avionics Systems.

Each module is assessed through examinations, and students must demonstrate both breadth and depth of knowledgein their chosen category.

Why Are the Exams Important?

The aviation industry is highly regulated for one main reason—safety. The EASA B1 and B2 exams ensure that every certified engineer has:

  • A thorough understanding of aircraft systems.

  • The skills to identify and correct faults.

  • The competence to release an aircraft back into service safely.

Without passing these exams, an individual cannot hold the certification required to sign off on maintenance tasks or guarantee the airworthiness of an aircraft.

How Do You Qualify?

There are two main routes:

  1. Through an Approved Training Organisation (Part-147):

    • Students attend a structured course.

    • Exams are conducted within the training program.

    • Whole program of the exams is around 2 years long. This option is very costly for most individuals
    • Experience requirement: 2 years. After you pass the exams, you require 2 years of work experience to get your license.

  2. Through Independent Exams (without an approved course):

    • Candidates self-study or attend non-approved coaching. Which is a much more quicker and cost effective option.

    • Exams are taken at approved EASA examination centres.

    • Experience requirement: 5 years (or 3 years if relevant non-commercial aviation experience is held). After you pass the exams, you require the above mentioned number of experience to get the license.

In both cases, the exams must be passed to demonstrate knowledge before a licence can be issued.

The EASA B1 and B2 exams are much more than just academic requirements. They are the gateway to becoming a licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer, a highly respected role in the aviation industry. Whether you want to work on aircraft engines and structures (B1) or specialise in avionics systems (B2), passing these exams opens doors to an exciting, global career in aviation maintenance.

For aspiring engineers, the journey may be demanding, but the reward is a career at the heart of aviation safety and innovation.
